A Brief History

In 1984, a group of Latin-Americans who had lived through the challenges that every immigrant faces upon arrival in a new country decided to form an organization geared towards orienting newcomers to Quebec and assisting them in difficult times. During that same year, La Corporation Culturelle Latino-Americaine de l’Amitié (COCLA) was incorporated as a non profit organization under the Québec charter.

In March 1985, with the help of Minister Dean Moffat, and congregation of St Andrews Norwood United Church in St Laurent, COCLA established itself on the church premises. With the sale of the church in 2006, COCLA moved to a new location: 1357 Rue St-Louis.
COCLA

Over the years, COCLA has put into place many social services to help the needy, including the very first food bank in the borough of Saint-Laurent.

Although COCLA counts many Latin-Americans among its members, it also helps people from all over the world to find friendship, spiritual guidance, and integration into the Quebec and Canadian society, irrespective of race, country of origin , and religious or political beliefs.COCLA’s work was recognised in 2006 with two major awards: the Ordre des Grands Laurentiens, awarded by borough council of Saint-Laurent, and the Mérite Municipale, awarded by the Ministère des Affaires Municipales et des Régions du Québec.
